The pico de loro bombilla means literally “parrot beak bombilla” and refers to the signature deep curve from the body of the bombilla to the mouthpiece. This makes it more comfortable to sip from without adjusting the position of your head as happens with straight bombillas, or bombillas with very little curve. This is a well sought after piece. Yerba mate is a deliciously bitter tea enjoyed in the southern countries of South America, especially Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Traditionally yerba mate is drunk from a gourd which is a natural cup made from the fruit of the calabash. The gourd is filled to around 3/4 and then water is repeatedly added and sipped through a bombilla straw. This is then repeated and passed between friends and family.
